During the pandemic, many of us have turned to reading in an effort to entertain and inform ourselves. Books help us see the world in a new light, educate ourselves, and relate to the stories of humanity, no matter how twisted those tales might be.

Book sales have shot up during the pandemic, as many of us have had more time to engage in our favorite hobby. So, what types of books will be popular as we venture further into 2021?

Pandemic-Related Fiction

The pandemic has inspired many stories about viruses and isolation. Some mention coronavirus explicitly, while others merely hint at it. Although coronavirus has been absolutely horrible, the pandemic of 2020-2021 will likely be a source of creative inspiration for those who write dystopian fiction for a very long time to come, although certain authors may choose to wait a few years so that they don’t come across as insensitive. Unfortunately, this topic is certainly something that all of us can relate to.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is becoming more advanced every day. Robots can do so much more than they ever used to be able to, and this is a source of fear and creative inspiration for many science fiction authors.

Non-Patriarchal Societies

Women are becoming more empowered, thankfully, and we as a society are starting to understand how difficult it can be for females to live in a patriarchal system. As a result, many authors have put pen to paper, creating stories that portray a more equal society.

Authors will likely favor a shorter form when it comes to stories in 2021. This is actually quite nice; it’s so satisfying to finish a book, and many talented writers can really pack a punch in around thirty thousand words.

Cyberpunk is a dark science fiction genre about what would happen if humanity destroyed itself. Post-cyberpunk offers a slightly less pessimistic perspective that aims to be more realistic. It portrays well-rounded characters adjusting to a more technologically advanced society.

Nonfiction Books About Social Justice

This pandemic has given people a chance to think, and, as a result, many of us have picked up books about racial injustice, feminism, and LGBTQ+ rights. This is an excellent trend to see, because education will likely be the answer to ignorance, and many of us are learning more about injustice and how we as a community can create a more equal world.
